We will be patching V Rising today at 08:00 UTC / 10:00 CEST. The patching process is expected to last up to an hour.

The following improvements will be added to V Rising with this patch:

  • Saves with invalid game settings will now be marked as “Corrupt” in the Continue screen to help players identify potential connection issues
  • Various cases where saved data could become corrupted should no longer occur.
  • Fixed a bug with carpets beneath castle hearts that made it impossible to move/dismantle either the carpet or the castle heart.
  • Fixed various issues allowing players to build inside cliff regions.
  • Fixed a bug with plantable trees and plants that did not correctly attach to your territory. Now it is no longer possible to dismantle a territory with a plantable tree on it. Existing planted trees without any supported territory will be removed.
  • Save files will now become one single file instead of a folder with multiple files.
Example: A save would previously become a folder ( “AutoSave_56”) containing various files, while now it instead becomes one single file (AutoSave_56.save) in the location where the folder previously would be placed.

There will be a patch next week that will help address some of the issues that some server owners have been having with Corrupted Saves. The change is going to involve altering the way that saves are recorded, so these will be incompatible with previous saves.

To prevent the possibility of having an issue with the patch that causes you to irrevocably lose your save, PLEASE CREATE A BACKUP OF YOUR SERVER'S SAVE FILE.

V RISING DEV UPDATE #15: FUTURE VISIONS https://vrising-servers.net/blog/20/v-rising-dev-update/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/20/v-rising-dev-update/ Thu, 01 Sep 2022 13:47 CEST [blog.stunlock.com]

Dev Update #15: Future Visions

Welcome to another dev update! In this blog, we’ll be sharing some of what we learned from the first months of Early Access and planned improvements to the game as we move forward. We’re taking a peek into the future of Vardoran and what’s required for us to deliver on your darkest wishes. Many of our ideas are currently early in the production or planning phase, so please keep in mind that everything mentioned in our studio reports is subject to change.

Settle in with your bloody refreshment of choice, and let’s get started!

Early Access Learnings & Game Updates

First, we must thank you again for playing V Rising and supporting us! More than 2.5 Million vampires have awoken from the crypt, which is far beyond our expectations. This is amazing news for all V Rising fans, as it strengthens our decision to keep our focus on the game for the foreseeable future. There are a lot of chains rattling in the Stunlock crypt right now, and the evolution of V Rising has started!

At Stunlock, we’ve carefully watched how you play our game and studied your feedback to find out what you want from the vampire experience. We want V Rising to be the best it can possibly be, and with that in mind, we’ve realized we’ll have to do some serious, deep systemic work on the game. V Rising is a complex project, and every added feature affects other loops of the game; significant changes require re-work and fixes across the board. While we were initially hoping to bring our first content update this year, we recognize that trying to push out content on old and outdated systems in the middle of a rework will only serve to slow down production time overall. Our first big content update for V Rising is now slated for 2023, and it will be massive! With that will come plenty of new features and content worth your time that also lay the groundwork for the game's future.

Throughout the rest of this dev update, we’ll be talking about some of the issues we’ve found and ways we’re looking at addressing them, as well as some of the wicked concepts we’ve been amusing ourselves with. While this dev blog is more general, you can expect a more in-depth deep dive into what we’re working on in the coming months and what we will be doing to shape the world of Vardoran into a suitable staging ground for your future vampire legend.

Improvements and Content

Even if it’s too early to confirm the content for the first big update, we want to give you insight into some of the things we’re working on and potential new features coming between now and the full release. We believe that V Rising has a strong foundation and want to improve on that rather than completely changing the game.

The Castle:
Many beautiful domains have been built, worthy of dreaded thrones, and we want to further enable your creativity. We understand the need for more flexibility and choices and want to ensure we satisfy all the architects out there. We’re looking into ways to more easily relocate your castle, add more cosmetic content, and create new ways to interact with your castle.

Play on, Vampires.

One feature that we’re exploring is adding multiple floors (two or more!) to the castle. The idea of massive dreaded spires and the thought of having a labyrinthian citadel with many different levels to explore is a part of the vampire fantasy, but the technical challenges have left us prioritizing other options up into the Early Access release. It’s still uncertain if this feature will end up in the game, but we will be experimenting with the various ways we may be able to implement it. It’s important that in our approach to mechanics that can be revolutionary like this one, it can be done in a way that preserves the things we already love about V Rising before committing to it.

How about creating a more fancy garden?

Castle servants is another popular feature we wish to explore further. We’ve witnessed players using servants in all sorts of innovative ways, some of which are certainly more intended than others. Emergent gameplay like this and players’ reactions have given us some inspiration, but it’s too soon to say exactly how we intend to expand on the servant system.

More ways to exert your will.

A New World:
We heard you desire new lands to explore, and we’re excited to bring more of Vardoran to you. There’s a brand new biome in the works that holds many secrets, mired in mystery and fresh, unique experiences. It’s important to us that every region offers something new in terms of visuals, sound, and gameplay. There will be more enemies to fight, bosses to defeat, and V Blood to drink in to fuel your hunt. We’re not only expanding the world; we think it’s just as important to improve the current biomes and ensure that your journey is more exciting and interesting than ever.

Concept of a world with more density, more depth.

Our teams have been looking at different ways to diversify and fill out our old areas with more engaging content, making them richer and more satisfying to explore. Points of interest and reasons to go out into the world will encourage more player interactions as well as liven the experience of play as a whole. Richer, vivid scenery adds diversity and character, further solidifying the mood and feel of each zone to be a unique experience from one another and also giving us room to seed in information about Vardoran and the cultures and history of the world to impart onto you. Expect new encounters, new discoveries, and new items to utilize!

A more tangible world, whole with history.

New Weapons & Abilities:
The more destructive tools you have at your disposal as a vampire, the more variation in both PvP and PvE, the more exciting gameplay! A common request is new weapons and abilities, and this is something we started working on and plan to deliver. Our game director, Peter, already spoiled one of the upcoming weapons during an interview on the Allcraft show with Asmongold: The Greatsword. It’s coming! Expect that, along with additional weapons and abilities, to add more depth and diversity to the battlefield. Another feature we will be experimenting with is adding a new layer of itemization. These new drops to hunt would let you modify your gear to augment and further customize your abilities.

The standard attack pattern for the Greatsword.

PvE improvements:
With a larger world to explore, we obviously need more things to fill it with! We’ve been brainstorming and started developing all sorts of different ideas to populate the world with not only more kinds of enemies but more interesting ones. Adding variety to the enemy types means bringing new mechanics that change not only the way you play the game but also the feel of earlier zones as you have to account for new and very different threats.

We’ve also heard you and know that certain parts of the game need improvements in pacing and rebalancing in things like repair costs and build costs. There’s lots of room to iterate on the game in that aspect, and we think giving attention to this will make the current endgame gameplay loop more satisfying and robust.

It’s alive! Concepting new types of enemies.

I wonder where this could be from?

PvP improvements:
The early access period has given us a ton of data to work with regarding PvP. Observing your gameplay and getting your feedback has been invaluable to us. V Rising is a game with many intertwined systems and improvements to things like placement, new weapons, and abilities; these are naturally massive improvements to PvP as well. With time we wish to tackle the raiding system, and we feel there are many ways to improve and flesh it out into something more robust and satisfying. We want this to be something that keeps all of you competitive players busy and excited in the late-game stages. We’re also looking into what a Castle Territory means for the player and planning to solve exploits that can improve the PvP experience, as well as eliminate some methods of PvE griefing.

General improvements:
There’s a variety of improvements for us to work on based on both feedback we’ve seen and things we want to add, and ways we want to expand on for the game. For instance, we recognize the awkwardness of the paper press in the current progression. We want to move it to a new V Blood unit that makes it easier for players to choose when they want to hunt it down and gain the ability to invest in research. A solution that brings more player agency to the journey.

Fishing is a bit bare-bones, and we’d like to make the whole fishing system significantly more polished and enjoyable. We’d like to add more ways to automate your castle, possibly something that can be tied in with servants to otherwise increase the effectiveness of managing your castle. In this way, we can make the entire building, crafting, and progression experience of V Rising more fun to engage with without abandoning the survival aspects of the game.

Another kind of dead.

Sound is another area we will be working on, which brings even more atmosphere and diversity to the world. We’re both improving the existing soundscape and expanding the Vardoran experience with additional music and layers of ambiance. Players might also be happy to know that we’re looking into adding controller support, and we’re increasingly confident that it’s something that will be possible for us. This would be a major step in the direction of being able to port to consoles and other platforms, as well as offer better support for Steamdeck.

Other quality of life features like making world traversal easier and more engaging, inventory improvements, or ways to carry more loot from place to place if you invest in the ability to do so are also on our list. These are just a few of many general improvements coming!

Marketing & Community:
As with game production, there is also a lot of effort behind V Rising’s marketing machine, and we couldn’t be happier with the results from our Early Access launch campaigns. More than 2.5 Million copies sold within three months places V Rising among the best-selling PC games in 2022. Last week we visited Gamescom with a presence both in the entertainment area and the business section. Besides connecting with fans and expanding our brand awareness, there were meetings with potential partners and collaborators who can help us bring V Rising to new markets and regions.

Focusing on massive “expansion-ish” patches gives the marketing team more time to build strong campaigns to ensure that everyone will hear about the next update both before and when it lands. While we’re preparing the promotional fireworks, we will simultaneously continue to support our community and drop dev blogs with the latest news from inside Stunlock Studios!

Thank you to all who had the chance to visit our V Rising booth at Gamescom!

Look Forward to the Future

We hope this gives you a hint of what is coming, and we can’t wait to reveal more in the coming months. There are still questions about the dark master, the overlord of all vampires, Dracula. Will he return to Vardoran? Our finest prophets promise he will, but we still don’t know when or what dreaded form he will take. What we do know is that the future of the vampire is something to look forward to!

Until next time, bloodsuckers.

Patch 0.5.42553 | Patch Notes | Hotfix 8 https://vrising-servers.net/blog/15/patch-0542553-patch-notes-hotfix-8/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/15/patch-0542553-patch-notes-hotfix-8/ Wed, 06 Jul 2022 10:06 CEST

We will be patching the client (V Rising game) today at 10:00 CEST / 08:00 UTC and the server version between 13:00 and 14:00 CEST / 11:00 and 12:00 UTC.

The following improvements will be added to V Rising with this patch:

New servers can now be hosted with repeated scheduled wipes.
  • Servers with Scheduled Wipes will show a unique icon in the server list.
  • Added a filter to show only servers with Scheduled Wipes.
  • Server with Scheduled Wipes will display the number of days remaining until the next planned wipe.
  • Once the date for the wipe arrives, the next Server Restart will trigger a wipe.
  • Instructions on how to use this feature will be included in our Dedicated Server documentation[github.com] and on G-Portal’s website[www.g-portal.com].
  • We will open new Official servers with this feature in the near future.
  • Please note that Scheduled Wipes will only be possible in new servers created after today’s patch.

  • Added new ServerHostSettings for lowering FPS on servers when they are empty:
-The default is true and with a value of 1.
  • Official PvP Presets now uses 1.25 BloodDrainModifier instead of 1.0

  • Fixed a bug where clouds would get blurrier and start to lag over time.
  • DLCs now work in LAN Mode.
  • Fixed a rare server crash involving Directional Shields and Counters.
  • Fixed an issue where crashing servers would leave a growing amount of temporary data in the save folders. Such temporary data will be cleaned up with this patch.

  • The initial Server List request will now prioritize servers with players, to increase the speed at which servers are fetched.
  • Replaced “Activity” with “Territory” in the server list view.
  • Localization has been added for Spanish - Latin America, Danish, Thai, and Ukrainian.
  • Replaced “Days Played” with “Days Running” in the Server Details.
  • “Days Played” previously displayed the number of in-game days since server start, “Days Running” will now instead display the number of real-time days since server start.

With this new patch, the old version of the game will not be compatible with the new server version, thus the game must be updated to the latest version for it to work.

Please make sure that you have the latest client if you get stuck in the loading screen when connecting to a server by verifying game files.

In your Steam library, right-click on V Rising > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of game files.

If you are still having issues after 14:00 and have already updated the game client, please post your issues here[bugs.playvrising.com] and use the patch number in the title so that we can identify the issue easily.

The V Rising development team wishes you a happy summer! (Beware of the sun!).

    • If the server fails to save, all active players on the server now get a chat notification containing basic information about the type of error that was encountered.
    • The server no longer uses the Windows temp folder while saving the world. It instead saves the temporary files to a neighboring folder to the target save path.
    • Fixed an issue where some font characters were displayed with the wrong font in Hungarian and French (among other languages).
    • Fixed an issue where territory and buildings had a chance of not getting destroyed with their castle if they were constructed at a large enough distance from the Castle Heart (#306085[bugs.playvrising.com], #305657[bugs.playvrising.com]).
    • Fixed an issue where the screen could slowly turn dark (#304465[bugs.playvrising.com], #304266[bugs.playvrising.com]).
    • Fixed a crash that some players experienced when launching the game due to a video player crash. If you are experiencing a launch crash before the cinematic plays, you can turn videos off by entering -noVideo as a launch option to the game (related to #304250[vrisingbugs.featureupvote.com] but not expected to solve all reported cases).

Patch 0.5.41821 https://vrising-servers.net/blog/1/patch-0541821/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/1/patch-0541821/ Thu, 09 Jun 2022 08:49 CEST This is not a forced patch, so most players will get it the next time they launch Steam.

The following improvements will be added to V Rising with this patch:

    • Server optimizations for servers with long up times and/or a lot of players.

    • Optimized the map and minimap on servers with a lot of castles.

    • Added a “Confine Cursor to Window” setting which will confine the Mouse Cursor to the window when in Minimized/Fullscreen Window mode.

    • Updated the Social Panel: Now it displays all players connected to the server and their SteamID. We also added text chat muting functionality. Muting is persistent between sessions now.
    • Note: Some players were using the social panel as an in-game radar, this won’t be possible anymore.

    • The Blood Essence Drain Modifier setting should now work properly.

    • Fixed a bug where some types of lootable containers (Sarcophaguses, Book Shelves, Drawers etc) could get stuck in a looted and hidden state, never to respawn. All currently stuck containers will now respawn.

    • Castle Hearts now count as any floor type and can be incorporated in specialized rooms to still grant floor bonuses to stations/structures within the room.

    • Fixed a bug that caused some icons in the minimap to disappear. Now, the icons will always be visible in the minimap.

    • Servants will now be summoned to their servant coffin if locked outside their own castle while not being in combat.

    • Fixed an issue where some servants wouldn’t become available after completing a Hunt.

    • Fixed an issue where Servants would be able to open doors of an enemy castle.
Finally, we want to thank everyone who has volunteered to translate the game. We are very grateful for your continued support! We have now launched a Crowdin page to make it easier for everyone to help with the translations and see the translation progress in the most requested languages: https://translate.playvrising.com.
    Patch Notes - Client Patch 0.5.41669 https://vrising-servers.net/blog/2/patch-notes-client-patch-0541669/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/2/patch-notes-client-patch-0541669/ Tue, 31 May 2022 12:47 CEST

This patch includes general client optimizations to improve stability and performance, as well as the changes from yesterday’s reverted hotfix. The last hotfix came with a white screen crash issue with some users, but we’ve investigated the issue and it shouldn’t occur any longer. We’ve also included significant additional adjustments.

The patch is expected to go live at 11:15 UTC on Official Servers, and there may be a small amount of downtime.

    • Added ‘Texture Quality’ to the ‘Graphics Options’ menu, which can greatly reduce texture memory usage.

    • Added FPS Limit Option to Advanced Graphics Options.

    • Changed Low-Quality Atmosphere to High-Quality Atmosphere to keep the options menu consistent.

    • Fixed a bug where the antialiasing option could not be set to anything other than TAA from the main menu.

    • Stairs have been added to the ‘Castle Floors’ tab in the build menu to make it easier for players to find them.

    • Fixed missing meshes on particular world objects.

    • Fixed an issue that caused performance drops when hitting Night Marshal Styx the Sunderer with specific abilities (ex. Mirror Strike).

    • Added ‘Respawn’ hotkey to the ‘Controls’ settings menu.

    • Maximum clan size has been increased to 50 (game client hosting is capped at 20), If there are more than 10 players online, only the 10 closest and online will appear in the clan HUD.

    • Clan HUD will now properly show names with different colors depending on if the clan member is online or offline.

    • ‘Server Details’ will now show the amount of in-game days the server has been running for.

    • Fixed an issue where a Soul Shard could be put in a container if the user swapped another item in the container with a Soul Shard in the player's inventory.

    • Fixed an issue where duplicate armor buffs could be applied to a player, causing their gear level to increase above max.

    • Altering the ‘Refinement Cost’ and ‘Refinement Rate’ server settings no longer affects the blood essence consumption rate of the Castle Heart.

    • The drop rate of the following items has been slightly increased:
      Seeds for various plants
      Schematics (tier 3 research)
      Golden Jewelry

    • The following items can now be found in-game:
      Razer Hood
      Razer Cloak (T1/T2/T3)

    • Occurrences of multiple spawns of the same V Blood units will now be repaired upon server restart.

    • Fixed an issue where the Castle/Player PvP indicator in the escape menu was using game clients’ local time instead of being retrieved from the Server.

    • Cooldown is now applied correctly when swapping weapons while having a recast active. This means that players can no longer reset cooldowns by swapping the spear or the sword to a different weapon during the recast window.

    • Optimized server memory by removing data from disconnected users.

    • The client no longer tries to load old config files and will not get stuck in a white screen if the config files are invalid.

    • Any player can now dismantle castles, structures, and floors if a castle exists without a heart (this could occur due to an issue that was fixed in hotfix Patch 0.5.41448.) This allows players to clean out structures that would otherwise exist forever due to the missing castle heart link.

    • Added a loading screen when starting up which replaces the white screen that was previously there.

    • Fixed the issue where some computers rebooted when connecting to a game.

    Hotfix: Patch 0.5.41448 https://vrising-servers.net/blog/4/hotfix-patch-0541448/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/4/hotfix-patch-0541448/ Wed, 25 May 2022 11:32 CEST

A larger patch is going live today at 11:00 UTC / 13:00 CEST that allows players to play the game without an internet connection, new Steam Cloud features, and more. There could be up to 30 minutes of downtime on official servers and on player-run servers that are set to auto-update.

    Patch Notes 0.5.41448

We have now enabled LAN Mode, allowing players to play V Rising without an internet connection. Players can activate this mode within the host game screen and when starting up the server. LAN Mode can be played solo or with friends on the same local network. Please keep in mind that we will work on improving the LAN Mode as we continue to develop V Rising during Early Access.

We also added the feature to send server-wide messages. On GPortal servers, a message will show up in the chat when a server restarts as part of its maintenance routine, warning players to get to safety before the server shuts down. The expected downtime for server restarts can last up to a minute. Other server hosts can use this new feature to send important messages to players on a particular server.

This patch also includes several fixes to the “Authentication Error" that hindered players from getting back onto specific servers.

Salvaging cloaks no longer returns the total crafting cost, players can no longer make a material profit by crafting and salvaging certain cloaks in combination with the tailoring floor bonus.

Previously, if a player placed a soul shard in a container, it would despawn after a few hours and reset, leading to confusion. Players may no longer place soul shards in containers. Instead, the game clarifies that players need to build the soul shards within their castle to keep them. Also, players can no longer hide soul shards in lockboxes before being raided.

This patch also fixes the following issues:
    • Players can no longer send the same servant on multiple hunts by placing several thrones.
    • Castle floors will no longer disconnect from the Castle Heart when two players dismantle connecting floors simultaneously.
    • Players will no longer get multiple equipment buffs by equipping two weapons simultaneously under certain circumstances.
    • Some characters in Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Japanese used to display incorrectly at times. We updated the font used in the game to prevent this from happening.
Steam Cloud can now store V Rising Server History. The automatic save is enabled by default. To disable it, please go to the Steam Properties for V Rising. This will solve an issue with “missing character” that could occur when joining a server from a different PC.

Server icons have been added next to the name on official servers to make it easier to identify them.

    Admin Commands
To improve management of privately hosted servers, we have added new admin console commands:

This command modifies the health of the target unit/object closest to the admin's cursor, allowing admins to deal damage or heal targets.

This command modifies the durability of equipped items. Note that it cannot be used to repair broken items that are not equipped.

This command adds up to 12 in-game hours to leap in time, affecting the current in-game hour and the respawn timers of units and objects. Use this command in quick succession to add more time. Please note that a server can never go back in time.

    LAN/Offline mode

To play V Rising without an internet connection you need to follow these steps:

Before you disconnect from the internet you need to
    • Start Steam
    • Go Offline on Steam (Steam -> Go Offline…)
    • After this, you can disconnect from the internet
    Start V Rising
    • If you are hosting a local server you need to start the server in LAN Mode by using the checkbox in the UI or starting the dedicated server with the “-lan” parameter
    • If you are connecting to a LAN server you need to check the “LAN Server” check box in the Direct Connect to Server window or by using the “ConnectLan” console command

    Hotfix: Patch 0.5.41237 https://vrising-servers.net/blog/5/hotfix-patch-0541237/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/5/hotfix-patch-0541237/ Thu, 19 May 2022 11:01 CEST

A small patch is going live today to fix some issues we've been able to work with since launch day has gone live. Most of our focus has been on optimizations to servers to make sure they run smoothly with the tremendous load they've been receiving, but we also managed to slip in a couple of important bug fixes with this one. There could be up to 30 minutes of downtime on official servers and on player-run servers that are set to auto-update.

    Patch Notes 0.5.41237

    • General server optimizations to improve server stability and performance.

    • Fixed an issue where the day-night cycle could be de-synced if the server settings were altered.

    • Fixed an issue where explosives could be used to blow up palisades on PvE servers as well as on PvP servers outside of the time-restricted window.

    • Fixed an issue where interacting with haystacks in the world caused players to be pushed out of it instead of hiding within it.

    • Updated tooltips for tainted, unsullied, and exquisite hearts to better communicate the purpose of these items.

    • Castle Status now displays a warning when having less than 24 hours of blood essence upkeep in your castle.

    • Some minor drop table adjustments. Unsullied hearts should now be a bit easier to obtain as drops from standard units.

    • Changed the colors in the server list for different game modes to more clearly communicate the main types when browsing the server list.

    • Added a text for the journal when a V Blood unit is not tracked to better communicate the importance of tracking and obtaining new technology and recipes. This text is only displayed until a few V Blood units have been defeated.

    V RISING DEV UPDATE #12: DARK DOMAINS https://vrising-servers.net/blog/7/v-rising-dev-update/ https://vrising-servers.net/blog/7/v-rising-dev-update/ Thu, 28 Apr 2022 17:46 CEST

Hey vampires! I know you’re all used to us delving into the shadowy mysteries of game development, but today is all about building up. Join us as we lay the foundations for the symbols of any great vampire’s status.

The Castle; Your Home, Your Heart, Your Soul

The idea of the home is vastly prominent in vampire mythology, the epic presence of their manor looming above a sleepy little village. In a genre like survival games that focus on the shelter, it’s a natural fit for a vampire twist on the genre to use the concept of the vampire palace. We get to lean into that fantasy and provide players with all the tools they need to make a home that can be grand, majestic, but also compelling in its function.

    A nice and foreboding entrance.

In V Rising, castles are intimately tied to progression. The central foundation of your court is called the Castle Heart(long time readers may recognize it as the ‘Blood Well’ from back in Dev Blog #6), and it will serve as the foundation of the stronghold. As long as blood is pumping through the Castle Heart, crafting and production stations will be working to provide everything needed to empower yourself for your dark escapades.

If it seemed like you would be a regal dark overlord hammering away at a hunk of metal and sawing at wood to make your own swords and crossbows, think again! Simply create workstations, drop the materials, and give the word. The castle does all the work, using the dark magic of blood craft to weave together deadly weapons, mix alchemical marvels, and stitch together armors and capes to the perfect measurements.

    See? No hands.

No matter what the adventure in the world of Vardoran it will always lead back to your domain. The place to return to store the loot and have it made into valuable tools to rise in power. When you die, you return to your coffin to shake off the grave dust and plan for devious revenge. It’s a safe place to share with fanged brothers and sisters and revel in victories after a long night’s hunt.

    Raise the Walls

The castle's heart does more than just power crafting stations; it also defends them. It’s a living, though perhaps not breathing entity. While nourished, it will provide extra layers of protection, making it more difficult for other vampires to attempt to breach the defenses and get to all of your hard-won valuables.

When the Castle Heart is well-fed, other vampires will find it challenging to get in. As long as it’s secured and fortified, it should take some extra effort for someone to break through. Castles will heal themselves over time if they prove unsuccessful or do minor damage. Unless the enemy can do a lot of targeted destruction over a short period, it will be like they never tried to attack.

When a Castle Heart is well-fed, it will be tricky for other vampires to breach your walls. It takes a resource-costly and targeted attack to break down even a single wall. If they can’t get through all the layers of defenses and are forced to retreat, it will be reasonably easy to repair– and more than that, any unbroken walls will heal themselves over time.

Don’t worry, repairing statues and braziers is free.

The amount of dedicated resources and focus it takes for an enemy vampire to break down even a single wall or door means that when they get inside, it discourages them from destroying anything they don’t absolutely need to. All of the hard work constructing the palace of your dreams won’t be so easily undone, and recovering from a successful raid won’t mean cleaning up too much wreckage.

So invest in your estate! Build it big, build it strong, something to be proud of! Dedication will be rewarded. Those who don’t may suffer consequences, however. Ignoring the castle is like neglecting any other living thing and may lead to decay. When the blood runs dry, it will lose those protections, and those mighty walls will crumble over time. While it is sad that a home will be lost, it will be good for that precious real estate to be taken up by another, more responsible vampire.

    Breathtaking decay.

    Make It Your Own

What is a vampiric acropolis if not a statement of status? We are creatures of the night and proud of it. We take great pride in showing off our opulent status as the apex predators of Vardoran, and there should be no shame in showing off your unique brand of nobility. For this reason, we thought it essential to give plenty of options to tailor the manor to your taste.

From the doorway to the throne room are many opportunities to display a sense of respectability and style. Boast the finest archways in all of Farbane, the most glorious gallery in Silverlight, or the lushest garden in the fertile hills of Dunley. Line your coffin’s chamber with tinted windows and lush drapery. Roll out the red, amethyst, pristine white, or pitch-black carpeting. Line the walls with torches and braziers that burn bright with every color under the sky.

What kind of castle do you want?

Maybe you want to take all of these tools and craft a library from which to gather all the dark secrets of the continent. Create the perfect prison for the most precious human pets. Perhaps make a grand dining hall to meet with clanmates and discuss the brood’s next conquest, or maybe you’ve taken a liking to necromancy and want to construct a vast graveyard filled with skeletons, ghouls, and other horrors.

With the ability to easily rearrange the placement of workshops and decorations, with just a flick of the wrist, it’s easy to expand and craft the perfect palace for your unique seat of power. With all the options available, the only actual limit is your knowledge and imagination. We look forward to seeing what our players will be capable of when they sink their teeth in.

    Populating Your Castle

One could imagine those vast halls and chambers getting a bit lonely, and it might be difficult for the eternal to find worthy companions. So why not acquire some servants? Through the magic of, well… magic, an adequately educated vampire can go out into the world and hunt for good help. After wearing down their prey, they’ll be able to bend their will and order a properly enchanted human back to their castle. After bringing the freshly charmed thrall home, it comes time to make an important decision.

The charming process, name entirely metaphorical.

From here, there are a few options. If this particular human seems like a uniquely tasty treat, a vampire might choose to place them in a prison cell to keep as a prisoner and snack on periodically. Keep your prisoner happy enough, and you may even be able to feed on them more often, and if they have some sort of beneficial blood type that might come in frequent handy, you’ll be able to have it on hand whenever you want it.

We put up drapes to make them comfortable.

Alternatively, maybe you need a helping hand. For this, simply lower that freshly gained pawn into a servant’s coffin and allow them to suffer the sweet agony of undeath and eternal servitude. Maybe it would give peace of mind to have someone waiting at the base to deal with any intruders that manage to sneak in, or perhaps you’re sick of having to suffer the indignity of going back to Farbane to gather copper ore when someone else can do it for instead! Command servants from your throne to carry out missions, gathering materials without having to lift a finger or dirty those regal hands.

    Arise, champion.

Thralls provide another dimension to the castle, a sense of activity and unlife that adds to the feeling of being a dark overseer, commanding the lessers to further their evil goals. In V Rising, we want our vampires to have that. To, in some small way, roll out the red carpet and hand over the tools required to live the vampire dream.

    And so…

Let’s raise our glasses to the mighty castle, vampires! Cheers! The palace, stronghold, manor, estate, and home. Whatever you call it, they are the steps that we ascend. As you build it into the perfect seat of power, it will make you into the vampire worthy enough to sit at it.

    The World

    The continent of Vardoran.

V Rising is a living world, and every step of crafting it comes with a consideration for how we convey its gothic themes. The world needs to be wickedly indulgent in its mystery, a celebration of horror. This is a place that monsters call home, whether it be a reflection of the cruelty of man or its mirror in the hellish creations that stalk the shadows. Vardoran, like the vampire itself, must be as cruel and dangerous as it is enticing and beautiful.

As newly awoken vampires strike out to explore and conquer, it is our desire that details of the world itself give clues to its history. Though it isn’t a tale told, there are stories to be found in the way each place has been shaped by its inhabitants. As such, every corner of the world is wretched in its own unique way.

    Let’s start at the beginning.

    Farbane Woods

When the vampires of old were driven to near extinction, the Farbane Woods was their final holdout. The land is littered with the ruins of vampire civilization, scattered with crumbling foundations of ancient strongholds from hundreds of years in the past. It’s here, in the sunken corners of southernmost Farbane where our first vampires will awaken from their centuries-long slumber and first begin to flex their claws.

Today Farbane is an untamed wilderness of towering trees and overgrowth, a rocky and unfriendly terrain unsuitable for proper farming. The woods are rife with hungry predators that stalk the bushes and ruins. The most stable structures are mausoleums of ancient, vampire graveyards from the age of Dracula. The terrain is dotted with transient bandit camps and wooden strongholds that house the dregs of humankind.

Be wary of the moose, as well.

It is here where vampires will encounter their first proper human prey, the bandit faction. A loose collection of outlaws and outcasts from human society, the decay of the great barrier that once protected the vampiric crypts has allowed this band of murderous thieves to find a home here. These bandits survive almost exclusively on raiding, salvaging, and game hunting. As a result, their technology is relatively primitive compared to the constant advance of the great city of Brighthaven and its territories, making the bandits a fine first test for fledgling vampires to cut their teeth.

    The finest thieves in Farbane.

    Dunley Farmlands

    A foggy Dunley morning.

Dunley was once the shining crown of Dracula’s empire but has since crumbled to dust. The remnants made a fine place for human civilization to expand and settle. The earth was soaked in the blood of the endless battles that drove humanity to the edge of extinction, the soil fertilized with their brothers and sisters. The earth bears fruit, vegetables, and hosts the finest livestock on the continent.

A quiet moment in the Dunley Monastery.

For the people of Dunley, the church’s victory over the vampire threat allowed them to take back their fields once again. Instead of having their blood drained from their throats, they pour it into their work farming in service of themselves. They’re simple folk, with simple desires, and the aristocrats and powers within the Church of Luminance ensure that they stay that way. A fine, ignorant buffer to absorb the attention of the monsters of Vardoran.

Humans should know better than to be out at this hour.

The idyllic fields might fool you into thinking Dracula’s influence has faded entirely from the land, but fragments of his dark power still linger over the land like the eerie, lonely stillness of a foggy morning. Strange sounds rattle seemingly abandoned fields at night. Defenseless townspeople avoid the desolate paths, as everyone seems to know someone that’s gone mysteriously missing. Rattled villagers tell tales of finding macabre leavings decorating the road like bloodied overalls or half a dozen snapped off human fingers. The church and militia have worked together to enclose the local iron mine with a full regiment of soldiers and wooden barricades, and have refused to elaborate as to why.

A militia stronghold manned and fortified.

The rugged militia awaits, more than willing to stand between any vampire and the tasty, defenseless villagers of their towns. The volunteers of the Militia are made of the bravest and most hearty common folk, willing to step up to defend their own. Led by the formidable Captain Octavian, and under the watchful eye of the local monastery of the Church of Luminance, it will be no small feat to carve through their ranks and bend this to place to your will. It is, however, a necessary step on the road to ascension, and a challenge worth undertaking.

Some easier prey, if that’s your thing.

    Cursed Forest

    Watch your step.

There’s only one safe way to enter the wretched northern lands, and ‘safe’ is a very relative term. To find your way here, follow the roads to the northernmost parts of Dunley where the path begins to get muddy, and the scent of rotting corpses should get you the rest of the way. The road down is a welcoming one, just like a python welcomes a rodent into its gullet: a wet, winding path down into choking depths.

It is said that the last of Dracula’s loyalists, fanatical to the point of worship, attempted to revive their emperor through dangerous and wretched rituals in the aftermath of his death. Whatever happened, no intelligent being survives to tell the tale, and what’s left in the aftermath is the horrible curse that inhabits this place.

    May she never find rest.

This is the Cursed Forest. Though once having the same spritely charm as the Farbane Woods, the once vibrant forest has long since been corrupted by forces so dire that the land itself has become malevolent.

In this desecrated place, the boundary between life and death is blurred. The shattered remains of civilization crawl with tortured spirits and walking, half-living corpses. Wildlife sport glowing green eyes and wooden protrusions between the hooked and curling trees. Even the witches, ancient primal forces, have become darker, uglier reflections of themselves.

One way in, no way out.

The land itself beckons a challenge, a place where vampires may stare into the face of true, unrepentant evil. Perhaps their first opportunity to truly find an equal in their cruelty.

    Silverlight Hills

    Where humanity burns brightest.

The seat of power of human civilization, unquestioningly, are the lands of Silverlight Hills. The leaves, grass, and fauna alike are all ablaze with the vivid sunset colors of autumn. Between the sparkling western shores of Vardoran and the winding valleys and paths of this mountainous terrain rests the highest order of human civilization in all the land, the sprawling port city of Brighthaven and the home of the Church of Luminance.

The shores of Silverlight are where man first landed in Vardoran, a rocky valley rich in mineral resources. It is then appropriate that this place would serve as both the birth of human society and their final holdout against vampires in the age of Dracula. Its veins of silver ore, a material of such purity that it is toxic to vampire kind, gave the final resistance the ability to narrowly fend off the looming reach of Dracula’s empire.

The safest place in Vardoran, they say.

This port city, a hub of trade and stability in the region, is a living and breathing ecosystem of its own. The rich and powerful, those most closely tied to the Church of Luminance, make their homes here in the finer parts of the city. With long docks, high walls, and waving blue banners hanging from between towering buildings, one might be too distracted to notice the slums. In the slums reside the lowest of the subjects, those less fortunate, and the bent and the strained backbone of Brighthaven society. These are the subjugated masses of humankind, pushed into servitude and squalor– desperate enough, now, to be brought to the brink of violence. It’s not uncommon for an uppity gang to try their hand at taking power within the city by force, only to be struck down and exiled to Farbane.

Keep your hand on your wallet. The Brighthaven slums.

Just outside of Brighthaven on the highest hill sits a shining beacon of the Light’s influence. The Fortress of Light. This sacred site is guarded by the church’s greatest champion, Solarus, who stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance in the name of the Church of Luminance.

Climb the steps, if you dare.
